Measure SEO progress, not just a position
Track comparable searches and connect visibility to useful visits and business outcomes.
A search position is a snapshot. Search Console clicks, impressions and relevant business outcomes provide a broader picture.
STEP 01
Choose a useful baseline
Pick searches that matter to your audience and the page that best answers each one. Search results vary by context, including location and device. Keep measurement conditions consistent when comparing positions.
Your next step: Record the query, target page, country, device and date before making changes.
STEP 02
Look beyond daily fluctuations
Use Search Console to compare clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position over comparable periods. Average position is an aggregate, not a fixed rank everyone sees. Check indexing and seasonality before blaming a single change.
Your next step: Compare two similar periods and note which queries and pages gained useful clicks.
STEP 03
Report work and outcomes separately
Record what you changed and when, then review whether visitors completed relevant goals such as enquiries or purchases. Correlation does not prove that one edit caused a ranking change. Google says some improvements take days, while others can take months.
Your next step: Write a client update with the change, the observed result and the next check—not a promise of page one.
