Use social sharing to reach real people

Promote useful work, understand referral traffic and keep social metrics separate from rankings.

Social promotion can help people discover your content. Likes and follower counts are not a shortcut to Google rankings.

STEP 01

Share where the audience already is

Adapt useful content to the community and answer real questions. Google’s SEO Starter Guide recommends appropriate promotion to help interested people discover new content, including through social media.

Your next step: Turn one useful page into a short post that answers a specific question and links to the full resource.

STEP 02

Measure relevant visits

Use campaign links and analytics to distinguish referral visits from organic search. Engagement can tell you what interests an audience, but it does not establish that Google has ranked the page higher.

Your next step: Give each campaign a consistent source, medium and campaign name, then check visits and enquiries.

STEP 03

Make the destination useful

Keep the page’s promise consistent with the post, make the next step clear and improve the visitor experience. Social previews affect how a shared link looks; they do not guarantee search visibility.

Your next step: Check the shared title, image and destination before publishing a post.
